Large CF8M Butterfly Valve Castings: Manufacturing Process, Inspection and Quality Requirements

2026-06-09

Telida Metals just completed casting 4 sets of NPS 54" butterfly valves in stainless steel S316 for a dam project in US.

Butterfly valves are widely used in water treatment, chemical processing, marine applications, and food industries due to their simple structure, reliable sealing performance, and cost-effective operation. Among the various materials used for valve manufacturing, Stainless Steel 316 (SS316) is highly preferred because of its excellent corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, and durability in aggressive environments. The casting process plays a critical role in producing high-quality butterfly valve bodies that meet stringent industrial standards.

Stainless Steel 316 contains approximately 16–18% chromium, 10–14% nickel, and 2–3% molybdenum. The addition of molybdenum significantly enhances resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in chloride-containing environments such as seawater and chemical plants. These characteristics make SS316 an ideal material for butterfly valves used in demanding service conditions.

The casting of SS316 butterfly valve bodies is commonly performed using sand casting or investment casting processes, depending on the valve size and surface finish requirements. Large-diameter butterfly valves are typically produced through sand casting due to its economic advantages and ability to accommodate complex geometries. The mold design must ensure proper metal flow and solidification to minimize casting defects such as shrinkage porosity, gas holes, cold shuts, and inclusions.

One of the primary challenges in casting SS316 is its relatively high melting temperature and significant shrinkage during solidification. Proper gating and riser design are essential to ensure adequate feeding of molten metal during cooling. Computer-aided casting simulation software is often employed to optimize mold filling and solidification patterns before production begins. This helps reduce defect rates and improve casting yield.

Quality control is another crucial aspect of manufacturing SS316 butterfly valve castings. After casting and cleaning, components undergo visual inspection, dimensional verification, and non-destructive testing methods such as radiographic testing (RT), dye penetrant testing (PT), and ultrasonic testing (UT). These inspections help identify internal and surface defects that could compromise valve performance in service.

Heat treatment may also be applied to relieve residual stresses and improve material homogeneity. Following machining operations, the valve body undergoes pressure testing to verify structural integrity and compliance with customer specifications and international standards such as API, ASME, or EN requirements.

The successful casting of Stainless Steel 316 butterfly valves requires careful control of material composition, mold design, melting practices, and inspection procedures. The superior corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of SS316 make it a preferred choice for critical industrial applications. Through proper casting techniques and rigorous quality assurance, manufacturers can produce reliable butterfly valve components capable of delivering long service life and dependable performance in challenging operating environments.
