Performance Characteristics and Industrial Applications of Stelloy 6-G in Build-Up Welding Processes

2026-04-21

Stelloy 6-G is a cobalt-based alloy widely utilized in build-up welding processes due to its exceptional wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and ability to maintain hardness at elevated temperatures. As a member of the Stellite family, it is primarily composed of cobalt, chromium, tungsten, and carbon, forming a microstructure rich in hard carbides dispersed within a tough matrix. This composition makes Stelloy 6-G particularly suitable for applications involving severe abrasion, erosion, and metal-to-metal wear.

One of the defining features of Stelloy 6-G is its outstanding hardness, typically ranging from 38 to 45 HRC in the as-welded condition. Unlike many ferrous alloys, it retains its mechanical properties even at temperatures exceeding 500°C. The alloy also exhibits excellent resistance to oxidation and corrosion, especially in aggressive environments such as chemical processing or marine applications. Its low coefficient of friction reduces galling and adhesive wear, which is critical in dynamic contact surfaces. Additionally, Stelloy 6-G offers good weldability with minimal cracking tendencies when proper procedures are followed.

In terms of applications, Stelloy 6-G is commonly used for hardfacing components that require extended service life under harsh conditions. These include valve seats, pump shafts, turbine blades, cutting tools, and mining equipment. It is also extensively applied in the oil and gas industry, power generation, and petrochemical sectors. The alloy is particularly valuable for refurbishing worn components, restoring them to or even beyond their original performance standards through build-up welding techniques.

The specification of Stelloy 6-G typically aligns with standards such as AWS A5.21 for cobalt alloy welding rods and electrodes. It is available in various forms including rods, wires, and powders suitable for processes like oxy-acetylene welding, TIG (GTAW), and plasma transferred arc (PTA) welding. Preheat is generally not required for most substrates, although it may be beneficial for high-carbon steels to prevent thermal shock. Interpass temperature control is important to maintain metallurgical integrity and avoid dilution.

Usage guidelines for Stelloy 6-G emphasize proper surface preparation, including cleaning and removal of contaminants to ensure strong metallurgical bonding. Controlled heat input is crucial to minimize dilution with the base metal, which can adversely affect the alloy’s wear resistance. Multi-layer deposition is often recommended, with the first layer acting as a buffer if applied over dissimilar materials. Post-weld cooling should be gradual to reduce residual stresses.

Stelloy 6-G is a versatile and high-performance alloy for build-up welding, offering a combination of durability, thermal stability, and resistance to harsh operating conditions. When applied correctly, it significantly enhances component lifespan and operational reliability across a wide range of industrial applications.
